a songfic for zechs and noin by Joppo Kelin
Disclaimers: All characters are owned by their various owners. I do not own them.
“Someday out of the Blue” – the theme song to “El Dorado” belongs to Elton John, I suppose.
Takes place in between the TV series and Endless Waltz with flashbacks.

Someday out of the blue
In a crowded street or a deserted square
I’ll turn and I’ll see you
As if our love were new
Someday we can start again someday soon
“Why isn’t there a bouquet for Zechs?” Lady Une asked curiously as she watched the slim lady approach the gravesite. In her hands she carried a flower bouquet which she placed onto the belated Treize’s tomb. But on Zech’s grave, there was none.
Noin.
Captain and Commander within the Cinq Alliance, Captain within Oz… although Noin was now a Preventer, Lady Une still remembered the days when Noin was one of the most feared mech pilots in OZ, an effective and good leader training and preparing her troops for war against the Gundam pilots during the days when they fought on different sides. She was 2nd to none only to Zechs Marquise.
Noin shrugged. “He’s out there. Somewhere.” Her eyes grew distant as she beheld the distant sky. “I just have to find him.”
Here comes the night
Here come the memories
Lost in your arms
Down in the foreign fields
Not so long ago
Seems like eternity
The sweet afternoons
Still capture me
It had been such a long time, Noin thought as the shuttle landed. Who would have thought that after all this time, this building, Victoria Base, out of all the buildings on earth, that this would survive the war? She moved through the empty buildings, her mind supplying the memories of times long back and people who had been either lost either in the war or were since long time scattered. People like her. People who had been young and hopeful, eager and staring at the sky, longing for a time when they could fly off to somewhere further and beyond the realm called earth.
She stopped. It was still there. The old bench. Their bench.
“Noin, Noin… what are you staring at this time?”
The young girl turned in surprise, but relaxed once more when she identified who the person was. “Oh, it’s you, Milliard,” she remarked, sinking back onto the bench. They always had a friendly on-off rivalry going between them. In class, in battle, they were always vying for the first position. At last count, he was ahead but she was only slightly behind. She pointed to the stars above. “I’m looking at stars.”
The blond haired boy sat down, squinting at the bright speckles of light. “Stars?”
“Yeah,” she replied, with a soft smile on her face. “Stars. And I’m going to go there some day.”
“Really?” Milliard blinked at her conviction. “Hey, that’s cool.”
“And what about you?”
“It’s kind of the same. But I’m going to be a gundam pilot!”
She laughed. “Is that why you’re studying so hard? So that you might be offered to pilot one one day?”
He grinned, actions speaking louder than words.
“And what about the Sank Kingdom…?”
“Oh…” he drooped slightly as he considered the possible future where he might have to succeed his father’s throne. But then he brightened quickly enough. “Well, I can be a gundam pilot and a prince at the same time, can’t I?”
She nodded. “That is true. She sighed as she gazed back to the stars. “Milliard, do you think that one day we’d be able to fulfill them? All our hopes and dreams?”
Milliard gazed at the stars. “Kitto. I’m sure we will.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”

Colony L2.
Noin tugged at her Preventer uniform, as she waited for Sally to come back with their meal. They had just come back from a reconnaissance mission, and had stopped by the colony for refueling before heading back to earth to report back to Lady Une.
In the meantime, there was some time in between to get out of the shuttle to enjoy some time off.
She sipped her orange juice, observing the passer-bys. Heh, who knows? Maybe within the crowd, she might even spot Duo…
Her throat went dry. It couldn’t be. But there was that lock of unmistakable platinum hair, that…
She got out of her seat. “Zechs? Zechs!” She pushed her way through the crowd, making her way towards where she saw the blond.
“Excuse me –“ Noin started before stopping short. It was not Zechs.
“Yes?”
“Sorry.” Noin stammered. “I thought that you were someone else.”
She went back to the table. Sally was sitting there already, food in place already. Sally looked up and caught the expression on her friend’s face.
“Noin, what happened?”
Noin sank back in her chair and rubbed her temples. “Oh nothing, I just thought for one moment I saw Zechs again, but it was just a false call.”
Sally looked sideways at her friend. “Do you still miss him? After all this time?”
Noin smiled painfully. “You know I do, Sally. Every waking moment.”
I still believe
I still put faith in us
We had it all
And watched it slip away
Where are we now?
Not where we want to be
Those hot afternoons
Still follow me
Noin drew the tattered photograph from the drawer and looked at it. The sole photograph that Zech and her shared. That was years ago, before the war, when the two of them had just graduated from Victoria Base. He was the top student, and she was the second best. Just two students in the academy, pit against each other for the best grades, with nothing more pressing on their minds beyond getting through the best that they could.
Everything was so right. Then the war came. But yet despite it all, they had found each other again.
And then lost each other again. The war made sure of that.
She closed her eyes.
“Noin! Noin!”
The door to her quarters burst open to reveal a flustered Sally. It looked like she had ran all the way from the pilot deck. For the normally calm, cool and confident ex-military doctor to do that…
… it could not be good.
Sally Po looked at Noin, eyes steady.
“We just received word. The war has begun again.”
Someday out of the blue
Maybe years from now
Or tomorrow night
I’ll turn and see you
As if we always knew
Someday we would live again, someday soon
The communication set sounded, and a screen flickered to life.
Lady Une.
Noin looked at her friend and superior. “So what’s the report on Dekim Barton? Did the Gundam pilots manage to foil Marimaiea?”
Lady Une sighed. “Yes, but they managed to slip through and make their way for earth. Operative Wind managed to destroy the main shuttle but again, Dekim has more guile than a serpent. I need you to rendevous with him and go down to earth. That’s where the main battle will be.”
Noin nodded as the coordinates were patched to her shuttle. “I’ll be there in 4 space hours.” She frowned as she regarded the operative’s name. “Wind… who is that? I’ve never heard of him before.”
Lady Une smiled faintly. “It appears that with all these upheavals, even the dead are resurrected. It appears that Zechs Marquise is back from the grave.”
Noin’s eyes widened. Zechs?

“Sir? Sir? You’re staring.”
Zechs blinked, as the familiar face before him gave way to form a shorter girl with a slightly miffed tone. The features were similar enough, the girl had the same laughing eyes and the upturned smile. “I’m sorry,” his voice was apologetic. “But you reminded me of someone.”
The girl looked at him skeptically. “Right. So where is that girl now?”
“We parted ways some time ago.”
Her face flushed in embarrassment, at the sudden realization of the paux faus that she made. “Oh.”
He looked at the pile of spare parts that he had gathered and placed on the counter top. “It was… inevitable. Our ideals clashed back then, and it would never have worked out.” Zechs shrugged, ignored the ache in his heart. He reached for his wallet. “Anyway, how much do these parts cost?”
“60 credits in all.”
“So cheap?”
“Well, it is a 2nd hand junk store, and once in a while, I do try to be honest.” She winked, recovering quickly. “Just count yourself lucky that my partner isn’t here. He’d probably talk your bills dry.”
Zechs shrugged. “Thank you then.”
“And sir…?”
Zechs turned, surprised. “Yes…?”
“Well, whoever that I remind you of, I hope you find her soon. It looks like you still care deeply about her.”
“Thank you…?”
“Hilde. My name is Hilde.”

Had it been so long already? Even though a year had passed, he still could not get used to seeing his grave, a small marker a testament to the soldier who gave up his life, lost in the flame of debris that fell on to earth. A soldier who in an attempt to create peace, ended up being the impetus for war instead. Well, his death insured peace. He made sure of that.
The world was at peace.
A peace that was about to be shattered once more.
His gaze fell on the companion grave besides his own. Treize… this was not what you intended. Treize had tried to tell him that a long time ago, but back then he was too bitter, too vengeful to listen.
But he was listening now.
It was time to take action. The Preventers were too weak against Dekim and Marimaeia and someone had to fight to save the peace that was so painfully won.
He nodded half to himself and turned to go when something caught his eye.
His eyes widened as he beheld the tiny bouquet. Inconsequential in itself compared with the other more prominent arrangements, he would recognize this style anywhere, and place any day. It was one done by her hand.
Noin had been here.
Automatically, his gaze fell back on his own marker.
… it was empty.
Someday out of the blue
In a crowded street or a deserted square
I’ll turn and I’ll see you
As if our love were new
Someday we can start again someday soon
The screen flickered to life.
The hand froze, its intended path halted in mid-path. It couldn’t be. Not here. Not now. For some reason, he found himself unable to pull his eyes away from his book.
“Is that you, Noin?”
“I’m here to pick you up.”
“I’m sorry for troubling you.” He lifted his eyes up to finally regard her. Her hair was much longer than what it had been, but beyond that, she had not changed much during the last time that he saw her. Her eyes still remained as challenging and as piercing as ever. “How have you been?”
“Zechs.” Noin’s face remained unwavering, her voice steady. “It’s been a year and two months.”
I still believe I still put faith in us
I still believe I still put faith in us
I still believe I still put faith in us
I still believe I still put faith in us

“We are not going to die!” Noin gritted her teeth as the wave of bullets hit her mech. “I refuse to say goodbye! Not when we just found each other again!”
The gunfire paused. Zechs had taken care of the enemy Taurus. For a moment, they were safe. She was safe.
Zech’s face flickered as he regarded the face on the screen. “Noin, this battle
is my own.” He started slowly.
”You don’t have to follow me – “
“No, do not even say it,” she replied quietly. “A year ago, what I should have said back then before we parted was that I would not leave you. All this while I’ve been waiting and waiting, wondering what might had happened if I had just said those words.” Her voice steeled with determination. “I do not wish to wait any longer.”
“Don’t you even understand, up ‘til now? I love you. And even if it means dying besides you in this battlefield, it’ll all be worth while.”
His mouth went dry. He bowed his head, humbled. “I understand. We’ll do this.”
And side by side, they marched into the battlefield. Together.

Author's Notes: Hmm... don't ask me where this story came from... was just idly minding my own business, listening to an assortment of MP3s and then "bang!" this story came in... amidst the homework and perching on the rock of angst, watching Yen write "Graduation"... *ponders* heh... maybe her sudden blaze of inspiration inspired me... which could explain why it's a songfic as well... *shrugs* who knows?
But I like Zechs and Noin. I probably said it before, but the strength of their relationship impresses me. ^^ Okay, actually more Noin than Zechs, but *coughs* ahem. Definitely one of the plus points of Gundam Wing and I always look forward when Noin comes up on screen. It's actually quite interesting considering how long ago it was since I touched Gundam Wing that one day, like in the song, out of the blue that i should write a songfic based on it...? Who knows indeed... who knows?
